About
Jay Wilkinson
"My work delves into memory and nostalgia, not just by exploring the past, but by attempting to understand how memories are formed and to reconcile the fact that memory is an imperfect record, yet the only constant in human identity beyond the present moment. We base much of who we are not on what actually happened but on how we felt it happened, which can be both beautiful and dangerous. My aim is to explore how we absorb information to build these memories, intentionally or not. Images, advertising, music, sirens, bruises, burgers, and bad smells can all be the building blocks, while emotion, invention, and fear are the mortar. To that end, I assemble little collected pieces of my world as it happens to me, into something that feels finished and unfinished. From there, I like to paint my jumbled subjects with a since of distance to make the work feel familiar yet beyond anyone's control. Often, our subconscious chooses how to remember, and we are just viewers reliving what our brain decided was important."
